FLORA
The flora of Tinos forms a living map of biodiversity, reflecting the close relationship between nature and people over time. As part of the LIFE 95 European programme, and in collaboration with the Tinos Agricultural Cooperative, an extensive study of native plant species was conducted in the region of Tripotamos – Xinara – Exomvourgo, under the scientific supervision of agronomist Manthos Villa.
The study revealed a remarkable range of flora: 118 species across 33 plant families. While the dominant vegetation consists of seasonal herbs and low shrubs, its ecological role in soil preservation is essential. Conscious grazing practices and the cultivation of ecologically and productively valuable species – such as caper bushes and melliferous plants – contribute to the regeneration of the island’s plant life.
The “Flora” section of the museum offers a fresh perspective on the natural landscape of Tinos, emphasising the importance of environmental awareness and sustainable cultivation. Through scientific data, photography, and examples of best practices, visitors are encouraged to discover, respect and protect Tinos’ unique botanical heritage.
