TINOS VIRTUAL MUSEUM

JUNE - SEP
WED – MON : 10:30 – 14:30

THE MUSEUM

Tinos Virtual Museum (TVM) was founded in 2015 by the Aegean Studies Center NPO, with the mission of showcasing the cultural heritage of Tinos through the capabilities of digital technologies. Its founding members include the architect Maria Grypari, who also represents the organization, the writer Vasileia Limnioudi, and the architect-urban planner Elena Chalkoutsaki.

The creation of TVM was based on the development of a rich archive covering cultural, folkloric, geological, and historical subjects. Its vision is to highlight the island’s unique cultural identity, from prehistoric times to the present, using innovative approaches.

The museum collects and documents studies, produces presentations and digitizes physical artifacts, stories, and oral testimonies, creating thematic libraries that form a unified digital collection. Its collections are presented through projections, interactive screens, and VR experiences, offering a dynamic museum experience.

The permanent collection of TVM narrates the story of Tinos through six thematic units: geology, archaeology-history, architecture-church building, folk culture, flora, traditional and fine arts. Each unit highlights the island’s evolution and its contribution to the broader cultural landscape.

TVM collaborates closely with academics, researchers, and the local community, strengthening the public’s connection to its cultural heritage. Through initiatives focused on oral history and cultural mapping, the museum creates a vibrant network of participation, emphasizing the continuity of Tinos’ traditions within the wider historical context of the Cyclades.

The Building

Tinos Virtual Museum is housed in a two-floor stone building on Malamatenias 2 Street, near the Morosini Tower and Moschoulios School. It was donated by the architect Maria Grypari and renovated following a specialized museological study.

The first floor hosts the permanent collection and periodic digital exhibitions, while the ground floor includes a gathering and workshop hall, as well as the museum shop, where TVM materials, artworks, replicas, original artistic creations, and functional objects are available.

The building’s design reflects its architectural evolution and historical phases, preserving structural elements such as the medieval stone walls of the original tower (at the entrance and shop), as well as later mosaic floors on the upper level, highlighting its use as a residence venue since the 1950s.
