ARCHAEOLOGY & HISTORY

Tinos boasts a rich historical journey, spanning from the earliest prehistoric settlements to modern times. In antiquity, it emerged as a major cultural and commercial center of the Aegean, with prominent settlements such as Exomvourgo and Asty (cities). The Sanctuary of Poseidon and Amphitrite in Kionia was the most important religious center dedicated to sea deities in the Cyclades, affirming the island’s deep connection to the maritime world.

Throughout the centuries, Tinos found itself at the crossroads of geopolitical shifts, passing under the rule of the Macedonians, Romans, Venetians, and Ottomans. Despite these changes, the island remained a thriving hub of trade and naval activity. The discovery of the icon of the Annunciation in 1823 and the construction of the Church of Panagia Evangelistria established Tinos as a center of spiritual and national revival.

Today, the archaeological evidence of the island reveals its enduring significance, inviting visitors on a journey of knowledge and discovery. TVM captures and showcases this historical trajectory, offering a multidimensional and interactive approach to the island’s cultural heritage.
